The most recent post by Dr. Hottub has revealed that he has adopted a new worship strategy. He claims that this worship strategy and the ensuing tactics are modeled after Rick Warren. As an analyst of this situation, I have attempted to identify his target audience without him telling me any more information. He says that his early service sings praise songs from largely Pentecostal backgrounds, he wears a cowboy hat, sits on a stool, and gives away bread with visitor cards. Based upon these tactics I have concluded that Dr. Hottub must be targeting Lancaster Larry. Lancaster Larry is 35 years old and he grew up in South Carolina. He went to the University of South Carolina where he earned a Masters of Arts in Business Administration. He left the South for a while to study abroad where he came into contact with people in oil exploration. He is now involved in global oil commodities and makes a six-figure income. Sometimes his check has two commas all of which he tithes because that is what he was always taught to do, even when he didn’t attend church. He leases a Lexus and a Hummer because he enjoys having a new car every 24 months. He has only been married once to his lovely wife Lancaster Laura who is the love of his life. She is a stay at home mom with 5 kids who only wants to volunteer with her local church. She home schools so she has plenty of time. They grew up Freewill Baptist but they are very comfortable in an SBC church that is “lively.” Lancaster Larry grew up loving JR on Dallas and country music so he loves the cowboy hat and the stool. His 5 boys love the bread at Ryan’s and eat the entire loaf of bread before they get out of the church parking lot. I would caution Dr. Hottub that his strategy is not effective in reaching Lancaster Lamont and Lancaster Lou who could be highly offended by his strategy.

I studied under the leadership of Dr. Patterson at Southeastern. I know him to be a brilliant man, a remarkable fund raiser, and a person with deep and honest convictions about the home and the church Those convictions did shape the way I teach biblical manhood and womanhood. However, I am shocked that Southwestern and Patterson didn’t get taken to the woodshed on this one. I can’t help but imagine that if this happened in Raleigh, North Carolina in their liberal courts a different outcome would have been the result.
I still do not fully comprehend why it was so necessary to fire this lady. Obviously she wanted to teach in a Seminary, couldn’t she have been limited by the curriculum if they really had such strong convivctions about her teaching? I would not have cared who was teaching me Hebrew. Who taught me biblical language was not going to influence the way I pastored a church. I am not going to imagine that I know the full story so I withhold judgment.
One PCA pastor recently told me that he was signing a petition against the Seminary that he graduated from because they have told the professors that they could not smoke their cigars and pipes in the building any longer. He said, ” We view this as this as an attempt to emasculate the seminary.” I was so bumfuzzled by this statement that I could not even respond. Is this the kind of odd legalism that we are heading toward?

What will the results of this church growth methodology and theology be in the years to come? What will our churches look like if the next generation of pastors think consciously or sub-consciously that they must fit in with this church growth model?
This was the comment I heard from one of our members after coming home from work yesterday. The person has never been extremely positive but it did shock me at the attitude of negativity. His negativity was centered on the presidential elections (DOUBTS THAT ANY CANDIDATE COULD HELP HIM). In addition, he had recieved some bad news at work about some “slow downs” coming. As this young man went into a tirade about how no one was looking out for him, I was reminded at how fickle we are towards our heavenly Father. He gives us every spiritual blessing by choosing us, saving us, and calling us to His kingdom household and then on top of that gives us more that we need in this material world. I thought of these things as we discussed jobs and politics with at least 25 pounds extra on both of our bodies. Why is it that our nation is only outraged when our refrigerator is threatened? When the economy began to look a little shaky a while back all those who were so opposed to the war suddenly changed subjects and forgot about our troops in Iraq. The silence is defening. It shows everyone who their concern is really for.
I encourage my congregation to vote responsibly and in a godly manner. Looking out for the best interest of others. We might be in an economic “slow down” and it might hurt our pocketbooks and yes, our way of life, but God is not dead!
